The solar system
The Solar System is the collection of celestial bodies that orbit around the Sun. It consists of the Sun, eight planets, their natural satellites, and various other small bodies, including asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
The eight planets, in order of
distance from the Sun, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune.
Mercury is the closest planet to the
Sun and is known for its heavily cratered surface. Venus is the second closest
planet to the Sun and has a thick atmosphere that causes a greenhouse effect,
making it the hottest planet in the Solar System. Earth is the third closest
planet to the Sun and is the only known planet to support life. Mars is the
fourth closest planet to the Sun and is known for its red color and the
potential that it once supported life. Jupiter is the fifth closest planet to
the Sun and is the largest planet in the Solar System. Saturn is the sixth
closest planet to the Sun and is known for its rings. Uranus is the seventh

eighth closest planet to the Sun and is known for its blue color.
In addition to the eight planets, the
Solar System also includes numerous smaller bodies, including the asteroid belt
between Mars and Jupiter, the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune, and the Oort cloud at
the outermost reaches of the Solar System. These small bodies provide valuable

Recent research has also indicated
that there may be a ninth planet, often referred to as "Planet Nine",
in the outer reaches of the Solar System. This planet has not yet been directly
observed, but its existence is inferred through the gravitational effects it
has on other objects in the Kuiper belt.
