• The Lion in the Farmyard

Pride invites unnecessary danger

One day, a majestic lion strayed from the wild and found its way into a farmyard. It was a sight that struck fear into the heart of the farmer, who stood frozen at first but then quickly devised a bold plan. Believing he could outsmart the beast, the farmer hurried to the farm gate and locked it tightly, trapping the lion inside.

The lion, realizing it had been cornered, grew enraged. Its mighty roars echoed across the fields, sending chills down the spines of all who heard it. As panic consumed the animal, it lashed out, first targeting the helpless sheep grazing nearby. One by one, the lion overpowered them, leaving destruction in its wake. Then, turning its attention to the large oxen, it began attacking them as well.

The farmer, witnessing the chaos, felt his courage evaporate. His initial confidence gave way to sheer terror as he watched his livestock being slaughtered. Fearing for his own life, he rushed to the gate, flung it open, and allowed the lion to escape. The beast bounded out into the wilderness, leaving silence in its wake.

When the dust settled, the farmer surveyed the devastation in his farmyard. His flock of sheep was decimated, and his prized oxen lay injured or dead. Overwhelmed by the loss, he slumped to the ground in despair.

His wife, who had observed the entire ordeal from a safe distance, approached him with a mixture of pity and exasperation. "What were you thinking?" she scolded. "You tremble at the sound of a lion's roar from miles away. Why on earth did you think it wise to trap one right here in our farm?"

The farmer looked around at the wreckage, his heart heavy with regret. He realized the truth in his wife’s words: his rash decision had brought ruin upon his own farm. Bowing his head, he silently vowed never to let overconfidence cloud his judgment again.

This story serves as a reminder that arrogance and impulsive actions often lead to greater harm than good.
