Might prevails over justice
On a bright and peaceful morning, a hungry Wolf wandered through the forest in search of food. As he walked, he came upon a clear and gently flowing stream. Feeling thirsty, he bent down near the bank and began to drink. As he quenched his thirst, his sharp eyes caught sight of a small Lamb drinking water further downstream.
At that
moment, a wicked thought entered the Wolf’s mind. He desired to make a meal of
the helpless creature, but he needed an excuse to justify his actions.
Determined to find fault with the Lamb, the Wolf narrowed his eyes and growled,
“How dare you muddy the water I am drinking! Can’t you see that your actions
are making it unclean for me?”
The Lamb,
startled by the Wolf’s harsh tone, lifted its head and spoke timidly, “Oh
mighty Wolf, I mean no harm to you. But how can I possibly muddy the water that
you are drinking? The stream flows from your position down to mine, not the
other way around.”
The Wolf,
unwilling to accept the Lamb’s logical response, refused to let go of his
accusation. Instead, he snarled, “That may be so, but I remember clearly that
last year you insulted me!”
The Lamb,
even more confused, blinked in disbelief and said, “Sir, I could not have
possibly insulted you last year, for I was not even born then.”
The Wolf,
growing impatient and more determined to press his claim, snapped back, “If it
was not you, then it must have been your family! Someone from your kind has
wronged me, and you must pay for it!”
Realizing
that there was no way to escape the Wolf’s cruel and baseless accusations, the
Lamb trembled with fear. “I am truly sorry if my family has offended you,” it
stammered, “but I assure you, I have done nothing wrong.”
But the
Wolf had already made up his mind. He cared not for reason or fairness. He was
the stronger of the two, and that alone gave him the power to do as he pleased.
Without another word, he leaped upon the helpless Lamb and devoured it without
remorse.
As the
Wolf licked his lips and disappeared into the forest, the Lamb’s final thoughts
were of the cruel injustice it had faced. It had learned, too late, that in a
world ruled by the powerful, justice often held no place.
