The Heart’s True Desire
Once, a tiny mouse tumbled from a bird’s beak and landed gently in the hands of a kind sage passing by. Feeling compassion for the helpless creature, the sage used his magical staff to transform the little mouse into a lovely young girl.
The sage
took the girl in as his own, raising her with love, care, and wisdom. As she
grew, she became a bright and beautiful young woman. One day, the sage decided
it was time to find her a suitable husband.
“My dear
daughter,” he said, “I’ve been considering who would make a good match for you.
The sun, with its power and warmth, would be a worthy husband.”
The girl
thought for a moment and replied, “Father, the sun is indeed strong, but it can
also scorch the earth. I don’t wish to marry someone so intense.”
The sage
nodded and then suggested, “Perhaps the cloud would be a better choice. It
softens the sun’s heat and brings life-giving rain.”
The girl
hesitated, replying, “The cloud is helpful, but it drifts and fades when the
sun shines too brightly. I don’t want to marry the cloud.”
The sage
thought again and proposed, “How about the wind? It’s mighty and free, able to
travel anywhere.”
But the
girl shook her head. “The wind may be powerful, but it’s also wild and can
cause destruction. I wouldn’t want to marry the wind.”
Finally,
the sage suggested the mountain. “The mountain is strong and enduring. It can
stand against the sun, the wind, and the cloud. It would protect you.”
The girl
smiled thoughtfully. “Yes, the mountain is strong and steadfast. But there is
one who can shape the mountain itself, someone even stronger. I would like to
marry a mouse.”
Surprised yet understanding, the sage nodded in acceptance of her heartfelt choice. Using his magic once more, he returned her to her original form as a little mouse. They lived happily ever after, teaching others that true happiness often lies in staying true to oneself.
